During last night’s Jimmy Kimmel Live, Warner Bros. Pictures debuted the first trailer for CHiPs, the movie adaptation of the popular 1970s/80s lightweight action crime drama. Warning: if you’re a fan of the original series, you’re probably not going to like this very much.
The film offers a comedic take on the classic series which followed the lives of two motorcycle police officers of the California Highway Patrol (CHP). Dax Shepard plays Jon Baker, who was originally played by Larry Wilcox on the TV series, while Michael Peña portrays Frank Llewelyn “Ponch” Poncherello, played by Erik Estrada in the TV show. The story finds the two partnered up as officers: Baker, a beaten-up professional motorbiker who’s looking to put his life back together, while Ponch is an undercover Federal agent investigating a heist that may or may not be an inside job.
The film appears to give off a 21 Jumpstreet vibe, which similarly took a serious television series and turned it into an action-comedy, that was surprisingly well-received. This… probably not so much. Who knows, maybe the “straight men having gay/intimate moments” type of comedy speaks to a younger generation?
